Product Description
Our simple set of two Penjing planters are hand crafted and vintage pieces from China. Though formed into rectangles they still evoke a more organic and natural shape with subtle irregularities resulting from hand working clay. The raw terricotta color is a natural and simple finish and well suited to housing bonsai or landscape senery. The Chinese art of Penjing is the ancient craft of growing trees or plants, keeping them small by skilled pruning; the artform creates aesthetic shapes and the illusion of age. In Korea the same art is called "bunjae" and "bonsai" in Japan. All translate literally into English as "tray scenery" or "tray landscape." Typically this is interpreted as referring to miniature trees, but actually it applies to any potted scenery or miniature landscape, including trees, plants, stones or water. The art's origin is likely in a convergence of Taoist ideals and Chinese medicine. Special medicinal plants needed to be easily transported in small quantities and kept alive. The artistic rendering of plants into little scenery combines simple horticulture with ideas of feng shui and finding balance. Because Chinese Medicine is about finding or restoring a natural balance within the body it is not surprising that the same motifs found in Taoist landscape paintings also emerge in the miniature landscape scenery of Penjing or Bonsai.
